The Wurzels + Corky

Scrumpy n Western LEGENDS

The Wurzels are back in Bridport for their annual gig this Good Friday!

The Wurzels, also known as the “West Country’s finest”, are a legendary British band that have been entertaining audiences with their unique blend of rural folk, rock, and comedy for over five decades. Hailing from Somerset, England, this talented group has become synonymous with good old-fashioned fun and infectious foot-stomping music.

Formed in 1966, The Wurzels were initially known as “Adge Cutler and the Wurzels”, led by charismatic frontman Adge Cutler. Their music, often referred to as “scrumpy and western”, is deeply rooted in the West Country culture and traditions, celebrating the joys and quirks of rural life. With their distinctive blend of accordion, banjo, drums, and guitar, The Wurzels have created a sound that is instantly recognizable and impossible to resist.

Following the untimely death of Adge Cutler in 1974, the band continued to captivate audiences with their infectious energy and irreverent humor. They have released numerous chart-topping hits over the years, including their most famous song, “Combine Harvester”, whichreached number one in the UK Singles Chart in 1976. The band quickly followed its success with the release of a number of similarly themed songs such as “I Am A Cider Drinker” which got to number three in the charts, and “Farmer Bill’s Cowman”.

The beginning 21st century saw the continuing of this revival of the Wurzels, gaining a cult status amongst students and a resurgence in theirpopularity in their native West Country, the band released “Never Mind The Bullocks, Ere’s The Wurzels” containing cover versions of contemporary British rock songs. The album title and cover were a spoof of Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols and in 2007 they pulled out of the Glastonbury Festival, having been scheduled to play the bandstand stage due to stage size issues, however they were invited back to the festival in 2008 and 2010 so massive sell out crowds.

The band continues to spread the message of ‘wurzelmania’ across the country. In June 2010 the Wurzels’ released another single (a cover of the Kaiser Chiefs “Ruby”) The same month the band released the band’s latest album “A Load More Bullocks”, timed to coincide with their 2nd appearance the previous Saturday at their return to the Glastonbury Festival.

Their music has brought joy to countless fans, earning them a loyal following both in the UK and beyond. The Wurzels’ live performances are an experience like no other. Their shows are a riotous celebration of West Country life, with the band’s infectious enthusiasm spreading to every corner of the venue from the moment they step on stage.

The Wurzels create an electric atmosphere that will have the audience singing and dancing along to their beloved hits. So, grab your dancing shoes, don your best West Country accent, and get ready to join The Wurzels for an unforgettable night of music and merriment and on’t miss out on the chance to experience the West Country’s finest in action.
