A film which world premiered at the Electric Palace has triumphed at the Oscars!

The Young Victoria, written by Electric Palace Patron Julian Fellowes, premiered at the Electric Palace last year in aid of the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust appeal. The film won an Oscar for Best Costume Design at the prestigious ceremony held in Hollywood on Sunday night.

Costume designer Sandy Powell received the Oscar for her work dressing the stars including Dorset actress Harriet Walter and Emily Blunt., who starred at Victoria in the period film which focussed on the terbulent years of the young Victoria's life,

The premiere at the Electric Palace was hosted by Julian Fellowes, who as well as being Patron to the Palace is also vice president of the Hospice. The evening was delightful and attracted a full house audience of 400, with proceeds from the premiere amounting to £9,500 in aid of the local Hospicecare Trust.

Free Admission - Live Music in the Bar

Brighton based Danni Nicholls has been writing and recording original music for nine years and regularly woos audiences with her original Americana/alt-country ever since.

Pulling on musical references from Johnny, Elvis, Chuck & Dolly to Gillian Welch; Carole King to Chatham County Line, Danni has been invited to support acts as diverse as Angus & Julia Stone, Sinead & The Dawnbreakers, Paul Curreri, Kate Walsh and most recently Otis Gibbs, Eileen Rose and Nell Bryden. She also occasionally plays with London’s mighty Green Rock River Band and Brighton's The Crucks.

Danni will also be performing with Nik Barrell, who performs in one Brighton's finest country - blues band, GInClub as well as playing solo sets of his intelligent self penned songs." Nik sings like he's drawing on a thousand years of experience and time has just been suspended" - Second Sunday.

A charity concert for legal action charity Reprieve

The Electric Palace is excited to announce that world famous musicians The Proclaimers and Billy Bragg will be performing together for legal action charity Reprieve.

Reprieve is a legal action charity, founded by Clive Stafford Smith in 1999. Reprieve uses the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners, from death row to Guantánamo Bay. Reprieve investigates, litigates and educates. Working on the frontline, Reprieve provides legal support to prisoners unable to pay for it themselves, promoting the rule of law around the world, and securing each person’s right to a fair trial. In doing so, Reprieve saves lives.

BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards Finalist 2008 Dogan Mehmet is a second generation Turkish Cypriot, with both sides of his family from the island. His heritage forms a big part of his musical identity, alongside his love for English traditional music and the rich cultural heritage of Brighton and the Sussex coast. Dogan plays violin, guitar, melodeon, tenor guitar as well as many Turkish instruments in a wide cross-section of styles from jazz and funk to soul and indie rock. With his band Dogan Mehmet & The Deerhunters he fuses Anglo-Turkish, Gypsy-Punk styles in a mix of traditions and strong acoustic grooves.
